How To Cut Electricity Bill From A Whopping $160 To $100?
When my November 2008 electricity bill showed a whopping amount of RM160 ($45), I was mad. From October’s RM134 to November’s RM160, it’s way too expensive.
With only 2 occupants living in the house and having none of the electric home appliances like refrigerator, water heater, electric oven, cooker and hair fryer in the house, the electricity usage is ridiculously high.
After discussion with hubby, we decided to decrease the electricity usage so that the following month’s bill dropped to less than RM100.
And yes, I am happy that we did manage to bring down the electricity bill for the month of December to about RM104.
Again we did it. January 2009′s electricity bill was RM103.
From RM160 to RM103, this is about 35%’s savings!
What did hubby and I do to cut the electricity bill from a whopping RM160 to current RM103?
1. Turn Off Most of the Lights. There are lights everywhere in the house and we used to leave some of lights on at night and turned them off the next morning.
Now we only leave the light outside the bedroom on. The rest of the lights are all turned off after 9 pm.
2. Stop Using Electric Water Boiler. I used to let my electric water boiler on 365 days a year. Now we just boil water when we need hot water.
3. Plug Out Unused Appliances. Beware if you have some vampire appliances like VCR, DVD or Hi-Fi stereo system that you aren’t really using but are still plugged into a power strip.
These vampire appliances are sucking a little energy all the time. Studies have shown that this kind of energy use can account for a significant percentage of your bill.
As for me, I did have a DVD player that I no longer used but was still plugged into the power strip.
4. Cut Down The Air-Conditioning Usage. Oh, talking about air-conditioner, I must admit that hubby and I love hiding ourselves in the air-conditioned bedroom to avoid the unbearable heat.
Of course, we still do so in the afternoon. But the difference is that we try to go into the room after 3pm. Last time, we went into the room after 12 pm.
And then, we turn off the air-cond at 12 am. Previously, we let the air-cond run until the next morning!
So, from more than 20 hours’ air cond usage to about 9 hours a day, I think this is one of the main reasons why our electricity bill could drop from RM160 a month to about RM100 now.
My next goal is to cut the electricity bill from RM100 to less than RM80 a month.
