How To Cut Down On Meal Expenses With Money Saving Tips

Meal ExpensesI have been trying to cut down on meal expenses using money saving tips collected online. I must say that some tips work for me while some aren’t so suitable.

Cooking Your Own Meals, the number one universal money saving tip on meal expenses, simply doesn’t work on me and hubby.

First off, I don’t really like cooking. Secondly, hubby can’t stand my mediocre cooking skills. Lastly, it’s simply a hassle to prepare meals for two persons.

Since I can’t use the first money saving tip on meals, I am doing my best to use other tips when eating out at food stalls or restaurants.

Let me list out some saving money tips on meal expenses that I have been using and very useful in saving me a few bucks here and there.

1. Eat Less Meat. Veggie dishes are cheaper than meat dishes, thus hubby and I try to order heavier vegetable diet. If we feel like eating more meat, we tend to go for fish.

2. Eat Slower. The faster you eat, the more you eat. It takes time for your stomach to tell your brain you’re full.

3. Eat at Food Stalls. Eating at a food stall is always much cheaper than at a restaurant. Hubby and I seldom eat at restaurants unless we have to treat our family members who come to visit us.

4. Cut Down from 3 Meals to 2 Meals. Hubby and I always skip our lunch. Instead of having a RM6 lunch for 2 persons, we opt for a cup of tea and some biscuits or swiss rolls.

5. Always Buy Generics. As we eat quite a lot of biscuits and swiss rolls, we buy the generic brands or local brands of biscuits and cookies.

6. Drink Plain Water or Chinese Tea. Water and Chinese tea is much much cheaper than soda, juice, coffee or tea. A glass of Chinese tea costs RM0.40 while a cup of milk tea costs RM1.10. Fruit juice is priced more expensively, from RM1.50 to $2.50.

Not only is water far cheaper than any other beverage, it also has the least amount of calories.

7. Brew Your Own Tea & Coffee. I used to buy at least 3 packets of iced tea before my credit card debt reduction. Each packet costs RM1.50, so 3 packets cost RM4.50.

Now I go for one packet a day. If I feel like drinking more tea or coffee, I make it at home.

As there are only hubby and me, the meal expenses are actually quite easy to control. It’s even easier after knowing more money saving tips on meal expenses.
